Broadalbin-Perth’s buildings and grounds staff is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and cleaning of the district’s facilities. The district employs 16 custodians, two maintenance mechanics, a groundskeeper and a supervisor to maintain more than 346,000 square feet of building space and the surrounding grounds.
Last year, the district eliminated two full-time custodian positions and replaced two half-time groundskeepers with one full-time groundskeeper. Custodians who are on the day shift – three at the Broadalbin site, two at Perth – are responsible for cleaning messes that occur during the day. Custodians on the night shift – seven at Broadalbin, four at Perth – do the majority of routine cleaning. Each night custodian is responsible for cleaning approximately 31,500 square feet each night – the equivalent of cleaning ten 3,150 square-foot homes every day.
In general, is the buildings and grounds staff doing a good job of maintaining the district’s facilities? If not, what do you think should be improved?

- Wal-Mart donates excess supplies – such as grass seed, mulch and fertilizer – to the district to use in maintaining its grounds. The company also donates goods whose packaging has been damaged – such as paper towels – to the district.
- Last year, the district purchased new grounds equipment that will cost taxpayers $25,000 per year over the next five years (a 0.25% impact on the tax levy). The equipment helps the district’s groundskeeper cut grass faster and aerate the district’s athletic fields – something the district has paid outside agencies to do in the past.
My honest opinion would be, the High School and The Learning Community are much cleaner than the Middle School and the Intermediate School. Sometimes the bathrooms look like they haven't been wiped down for weeks and have you ever seen the dust bunnies hiding in the stair ways? The renovations have been beautiful in all the schools, but the cleanliness has not changed in Perth.
