Question: I am an avid member of your fitness center, utilizing the gym five times a week. I understand that from time to time, maintenance and cleaning needs to be done, but I am wondering if it is absolutely necessary to close the gym for the entire week next week? Is there any way to open up the gym at all?
Answer: First, congratulations on taking advantage of this valuable community resource and using it to stay fit. We clean the fitness center every night, but that's just surface cleaning. This week, we're doing a much deeper cleaning - inside equipment, under surfaces, etc. - sanitizing and disinfecting the entire fitness center. Unfortunately, in order to complete this kind of thorough cleaning, it is necessary to shut down the fitness center for the week. I apologize for the inconvenience and hope you can take advantage of the beautiful weather in the forecast this week to find alternative ways to keep up your fitness routine.
- Stephen Tomlinson, Superintendent of Schools

B-P Fitness Center
Question: How much money does the community gym (fitness center) take in versus the money it pays out for staff to work there?
Answer: During the 2009-10 school year, the fitness center took in just under $8,000. That same year, it cost the district about $9,500 to keep it open for community use.
The fitness center does not always generate a net loss. The first year it was open, it generated a profit. The fitness center is designed to be a self-sustaining program, but its revenues are dependent on membership.
Each year, Mr. Zumbolo and I look at a cost-benefit analysis of running the fitness center and make adjustments accordingly. For instance, we cut back community hours this year based on member usage.
Click here for more information about the fitness center. If you have specific questions about the operation of the fitness center, call Adam Barnhart, high school assistant principal and district athletics director, at 954-2604.
